More for the mind than the body by Donald G. Hite III
I have several DVDs by Suzy D (as I’ve affectionately dubbed her), and I think you can really enjoy her if you understand where she is coming from. In all of her bonus interviews, she always stresses that her videos will help you lose weight by increasing your mind-body connection and making you more aware of your body’s needs. She doesn’t really claim that her workouts will burn a lot of calories. It’s more about getting into a healthy mindset. I think if you understand this and go into her DVDs looking for this kind of increased clarity and body awareness, her DVDs can help you. However, I can see how calling the DVD “Yoga for Weight Loss” could be misleading to people not familiar with Suzy D’s point of view.

The workout itself is pretty easy by my standards. This sometimes makes the mind-body connection harder for me. In a strenuous workout, the effort required to do the poses demands my attention and keeps me in the moment. With all of Suzy D’s videos, I sometimes find my mind wandering because the poses are so easy. However, I think of this as a challenge for me to really focus and clear my mind (rather than a flaw of the video).

Despite being easy, this video does make me feel good. It’s also a great stretch after a jog or other workout.

As far as the repackaging, I didn’t own the earlier released version of this DVD, so it doesn’t really bother me.

In the long run, I think Suzy D’s approach to fitness can certainly compliment your yoga practice. Sometimes I just need the burn (in which case I usually turn to Rodney Yee), but Suzy’s workouts can add variety and balance to my overall practice.

Great relaxation video by T. Hopkins
I see a lot of the reviews are about the weight loss portion of this DVD, and I have to say I have not used it much. However, I REALLY love the yoga techniques to get you going and then even having a monthly practice is really a nice touch.

I have to say I feel a lot of stress relief when I use this DVD program.

Great for beginners by C. Burke-Datko
I wouldn’t say this is an effective way for weight loss, but for someone who is just starting yoga, it was a good way to get started and get used to yoga. I did not read the back of the box (for props), you need 2 bricks, strap, & wedge. It is true, Suzanne Deason does not mention the names of poses, but I wouldn’t remember them anyways! I actually like Suzanne Deason and hope to find more of her DVDs. I only wished it came with a mini-book version so I could do them without the DVD. And yes, it is true ALOT of these kinds of instruction videos are sometimes not clear. But…if you are serious about this, I would recommend research. I found it is an effective tool for helping you better understand these kinds of things. Ask around, go to classes (if you can), etc. Lastly, did it work for me? Yes! I am a runner and these stretches made me feel so much better and relaxed. It teaches you how to breathe. I would not say this is the best yoga instruction out there, but I gave it a few trys and thought it was alright for me.

GENTLE Weight Loss by J. Cobb
This DVD is not meant to be a strenuous aerobic workout. It’s a gentle 30 minute quick-start for starting off the day and for those who are new to Deason’s programs. She does seem to aim the Energy Balancing portion of the DVD towards women, but most of her work is for women, and men can still benefit from the Energy Balancing too. This program is also good for those planning on taking on the full Yoga for Weight Loss DVD. When starting off and practiced by itself, that program can leave you a bit sore, as I have experienced many times over, so I find this DVD quite valuable. Be warned though, as many have already said, if you already have A.M./P.M. Yoga for Weight Loss, this one won’t be necessary.
